The Lonely Mermaid

From Best Loved Fairyland Tales Published in 1999

Synopsis

One day the lonely mermaid Miriam was sitting on a rock when she heard a voice asking her to come play with her. She saw another creature that looked like a mermaid but instead of a tail they had two strange limbs.

The creature was a little girl named Georgie and the two swam along together.

Georgie wanted to play on the beach but was sad when realizing Miriam would not be able to walk on land. To their astonishment, Miriam approached land and her tail became legs.

Miriam and Georgie headed to Georgie’s house for tea. Miriam was mesmerized by all the things she had never seen before.

The two girls had a great day together.

At night, Miriam could not get comfortable and heard the sound of her old friend Dolphin calling to her. Miriam knew that the sea is where she belonged and returned home.

Georgie was upset that her friend had left but thought she could see her from time to time when she looked at the ocean.

Lessons & Takeaways
Friends May Come and Go

Friendships often ebb and flow throughout our lives, with some bonds deepening over time while others fade away; these changes can be influenced by personal growth, changing circumstances, or geographical moves.

It’s natural to encounter people who positively impact our lives, even if their presence is temporary. Embracing the impermanence of these connections allows us to cherish the moments shared and remain open to new relationships that come our way in different life phases.

Miriam was lonely because she had not seen her old friends in quite some time; her days felt empty and quiet, and she often reminisced about their laughter and the adventures they shared. In the end, Dolphin returned, bringing with it a wave of joy and familiarity.

Even though Georgie and Miriam’s time together was brief, it was a meaningful time in both the girls lives that they hold with them for years to come.

The Grass Being Greener

When Miriam lives her day on land she is fascinated by many things. Simple items such as chairs leave her in awe. However, magical she finds this world, the first chance she gets to return to the ocean, she takes.

It is interesting that the mermaid is the one to find the alternate world magical. Obviously, as the reader we live in the world that Miriam finds to be so exotic. To us it is mundane and everyday life. Had Georgie spent the day in the ocean, she would have had the same reaction and had to make the same decision in the end.
