Fazbear Frights is a series of short stories set in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe. Each short story is broken into individual discussions to really focus on the individual theme.

If you want to get caught up on other terrifying tales you can check out my post on 1:35 A.M., Room for One More, Fazbear Frights #1 & Fazbear Frights #2.

Overview:

Devon is looking to get attention from his classmates especially a girl named Heather. He does so by writing a horror story about Heather’s twin sisters that gets him sent to the principal’s office.

Devon and his only friend Mick usually spend their afternoons together in their clubhouse but find it demolished.

The next day Mick introduces Devon to Kelsey, the new kid in school who Mick invites to sit with them at lunch. Devon is originally put off by Kelsey because he seems to be the kind of person that would hang out with the more popular kids. However, Kelsey seems to genuinely want to get to know them and other kids in school respond really well to Kelsey… especially Heather.

Devon takes Heather’s interest in Kelsey as a way for her to be closer to him. While he focuses on ways to get Heather to like him, poor Mick just wants to spend time with his friend.

At lunch, Mick explains to Kelsey how they need a new clubhouse and Kelsey lets them know he has an extra workshop on his parents’property. When the boys are about to go with Kelsey to pick up supplies, Heather and her friends insert themselves into the trip leaving Devon and Mick behind. Instead of waiting to join up with Kelsey later, Devon insists they go home.

The next day Devon and Mick go on a hike that Mick was really looking forward to. While in the woods a crow poops on Devon and he retaliates by killing it with a stone. Mick is shocked by his friend’s action but doesn’t say anything

On Monday morning, Kelsey apologizes for what happened. Devon acts like everything is okay but Mick can tell something else is going on. Devon suggests they go and visit an abandoned building to look for materials for their new clubhouse.

When they get to the abandoned building, it is a familiar pizza place. In the basement, it is revealed that Devon had explored this place earlier and had a plan to get revenge on Kelsey. Devon convinces Kelsey to get into an animatronic bear suit intending on locking him in for a bit. The suit however jerks around and blood pours out. Mick is horrified by Devon’s actions and wants to try to save Kelsey as he thinks he might be alive. Devon demands they leave as he believes him to be dead and does not want to go to jail.

Wracked with guilt Mick can’t eat or get out of bed. He keeps thinking that Kelsey could still be alive. Devon promises Mick he will go back and check but Mick has to cover for him and cannot tell anyone where he is.

At the pizzeria Devon finds the bloody suit still on the floor but when he goes to open it he finds no body. He sticks his arm in the mouth to feel around and it clamps down on his arm while he hears something calling his name. Trapped in the suit he is able to see into it a little and sees a body inside but it is not Kelsey’s.

On Monday morning Mick follows the plan and does not let anyone know where Devon is thus inadvertently insuring that no one can come to his aid.

It is revealed that Kelsey is in fact not dead and is at a new school targeting another group of misfits.

The End

Appreciate the People Around You

Mick is a good friend to Devon but Devon is constantly wanting more. He wants Heather to like him and even when she is mean to him he is hyper focused on her. He should be spending time fostering the relationship he already has with Mick who wants him in his life just the way he is. Mick is a kind soul who doesn’t deserve to be pushed to the side for something that seems more exciting

Stop Looking for Greener Grasses

I think the expression goes something like “instead of looking for greener grasses, water your own lawn”.

Devon wants more so bad that he can’t appreciate the life he has. He is constantly blaming his lot in life on his unhappiness. Mick on the other hand also has hardships but sees the world and other people as generally good.

Themes of Justice

While in class the different students talk about what their idea of justice is. Heather says its revenge while Kelsey talks about balancing the scales.

Devon is hell bent on revenge on Kelsey even though Kelsey did nothing to him. He felt that Kelsey purposely was trying to get Heather’s attention. In reality Heather and her friends were the people that isolated Devon and Mick and made them feel unwanted. Kelsey did everything he could to be their friend. Devon rewards his kindness by accidentally murdering him and doing it in front of poor sweet Mick no less.

Kelsey mentions that he wants to go to law school to be a real judge. From the ending it appears that Kelsey is some sort of being that goes in and gives people the opportunity to be good but when they are bad, they get punished. I don’t think it was a mistake that Mick was spared. He was genuine and always tried to do the right thing. It’s actually surprising that he wasn’t punished because most of the time in these stories people are punished for no reason other than that they were there.

Overall,

This whole edition of the series was perfection. The themes of isolation and how hard it is to find friends is very relatable and hits home to the reader.

I think this is the first volume that I have ranked as five stars but it truly deserves it. A great mix between emotional and creepy.

Looking forward to more stories in this series.

Rating: 5/5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.
